Why rappers make “depressing” music according to Cardi B
Cardi B hasn’t released a full body of work for over six years, and earlier this year, the Bronx native made sure to let her fans know that she won’t be releasing one this year. However, she has released singles here and there, such as ‘Bongos’ featuring Megan Thee Stallion and her ‘Like What (Freestyle)’.
However, not too long ago, the ‘Bodak Yellow’ lyricist took to social media to speak about hip-hop and her place in it, stating, “I know what n*ggas is missing in the club…me!” It has been a long time since Cardi B hit the stage of a club with new material.
Speaking about the kind of music she wants to make, Cardi (real name Belcalis Almanzar) highlighted how, since she started rapping, industry figures have been emphasising that she should focus on lyricism, unveiling, “Now that I’m in the game and everything I be seeing all these muthaf*ckas on Twitter like, ‘You need to have rap, you need to have bars, you need to have this…’ I want to make music to turn the f*ck up. ’Cause when I go to the club, that’s what n*ggas wanna hear!”
However, during her Instagram live, she spoke about the negative impact that drugs and lean have had on the culture. She honed in on lean and marijuana but also delved into morbid themes of death.
Launching head-first into the issue, Cardi declared, “These rappers nowadays, all of them wanna die. They all wanna die. All these n*ggas need to stop doing lean and smoking weed.” Almanzar also insisted that fame and money are contributing to the decline of hip-hop music.
Expanding on this, Cardi elaborated, “You know, this the thing about these rappers, right? They get money, and they start buying too much muthafu*kin’ weed, and too much lean, and they make that slow sh*t. The club needs me. The strippers need me. The hoes need me. The muthafukin’ get money n*ggas need me.”
While Cardi didn’t call out any particular artists by name, it is clear that since her arrival, figures such as Juice Wrld and Mac Miller have died as a result of drugs, and her analysis is not too far from the truth, it would seem.
Although Cardi has an issue with MCs smoking weed, drinking lean and making slow music, it is almost impossible for one to ignore that she is married to Offset, who not only does both but perpetuates the lifestyle in his songs.
