Why Kanye West and Jay-Z forced Big Sean to fire his friend
Recording in the studio with Kanye West is never casual. It is one of hip-hop’s most secretive creative spaces – built on rules, respect and silence.
In Hawaii, during the making of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye plastered the walls of the studio with signs that read, “No tweeting, No pictures, No hipster hats”. The message was clear: what happens inside stays inside. Breaking that rule could end a career. Big Sean learned that the hard way when one photo created by a friend almost ruined his relationship with two of the biggest artists alive.
At the time, Big Sean was also still an eager newcomer to G.O.O.D. Music and was working long hours to earn his place within the company. He took a close friend into the studio one night, believing that nothing wrong would come of it.
The room was full of legends, including Kanye, Jay-Z and Beyonce, who were all present. In the midst of that energy, he snapped a secret photo and shared it online. Within minutes, the image was all over blogs and fan pages. The session, which was supposed to be a private one, had suddenly become public. What should have been another step forward in Sean’s career turned out to be a serious problem.
When they heard that, Kanye and Jay-Z were livid. To them, this was more than a broken rule, it was a broken trust. When this first came out, they thought Big Sean himself was the culprit. Sean was confused and hurt, and later stated that “it didn’t make any sense to me”.
Once the truth came out and they realised it was his friend who took the photo, the decision was final. Kanye looked Sean in the eye, and said, ‘You gotta fucking fire him’. “People were mad at you think you being thirsty and it was your mans”. To Ye and Hov, the situation was a simple one. Loyalty was taking out anyone who crossed the line.
Big Sean was faced with an impossible decision. The friend had only made one mistake, but disobeying Kanye and Jay-Z would be career-ending for Sean before it even started. He chose survival. “I’m in a position where it’s Ye and Hov saying you gotta go”, he explained.
“I’m sorry bro, we gotta figure something else”. It was one of the toughest decisions he has ever made but it was his way of proving his understanding of how sacred the studio was to Kanye. In that moment, Sean had his future at stake, so he sacrificed a friendship. The lesson stayed with him forever: in the world of Kanye, privacy is power, and even one photo can cost you everything.
