Why is Lil Reese in Texas prison?
As the 2010s opened up before him, drill star Lil Reese must have felt good things were on the horizon; his career was taking off in a big way.
He featured on Chief Keef’s song ‘I Don’t Like’, which in 2012 placed both rappers firmly on the hip hop map. Reese followed up that success with his own releases, ‘Us’ and ‘Beef’, which demonstrated that he was a promising artist in his own right.
The producer No ID took an interest in Reese, which, considering his previous work with the likes of Common and Kanye West, was a big deal. Before long, Reese was being signed to the legendary label Def Jam.
In support of his burgeoning rap career, Reese collaborated with some big names throughout the early 2010s. He released music alongside the likes of Rick Ross, Drake, Juelz Santana and Twista, among others. He’d forged a decent place for himself within the rap scene of the 2010s, and things were looking good professionally.
But as his career progressed in a very promising direction, news from Reese’s personal life became increasingly disturbing. Several serious allegations were made against him through the years, culminating in a legal case that saw him sent to jail in 2024.
TMZ reported in September 2024 that Lil Reese was wanted by the authorities after he had allegedly assaulted his former partner. The details were unsettling, with the publication noting that the allegations against him included “punching and strangling”.
The initial reports claimed that the alleged offence had taken place in a popular nightclub in Houston, Texas, in 2024, but further reporting clarified that it had actually taken place two years earlier. But the broad allegations remained the same: Reese was being accused of violence.
In October 2024, he was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for aggravated assault. According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice database, he began serving his sentence at the Garza West Unit of Chase Field Industrial Complex in Bee County, Texas.
Reese remains behind bars in Texas to this day, with his release date presently pencilled in for early February 2029. On the other hand, he is believed to be eligible for parole within a matter of months, potentially as early as August this year.
