Why did Future and Ciara break up?
Future is the big-name, Grammy Award winning rapper and record producer notable for pioneering the use of auto-tuned sounds in hip-hop; Ciara, the Grammy Award winning, Woman of the Year awarded singer and actress. For a while, the pair were celebrated as one of the most glamorous couples in American music.
Their relationship began in early 2013, and quickly pivoted from tabloid fodder to worldwide official with the kind of hard launch you’d expect from two of the world’s most high-profile musicians: a collaborative single, “Body Party”, released in March 2013. It charted well, was celebrated by fans and critics alike – Rolling Stone listed it at number 22 in their Best Songs of 2013 round up – and had a gorgeous music video to boot, which charted their love story, illustrating how the pair met at a party.
Public displays of love soon followed, as well as an engagement. They were outwardly affectionate in public; supportive of each other’s supportive careers; their media appearances together were received with love eyes emojis across the world.
And sadly, with so many things in this cruel world, it was not to be. Sure, every celebrity couple has its fair shares of swirling break up rumours. Unfortunately, in the case of Future and Ciara, this proved accurate.
The couple welcomed their son, Future Zahir Wilburn, in May 2014. Despite being engaged, this was at the peak of their relationship issues, it soon came to light. And in August 2014, the industry legends announced the end of their engagement and relationship, with Ciara publicly confirming the split.
According to US Weekly – celebrities, they’re just like us! – a source close to the pair revealed that the rapper was actually cheating on his fiancé with his stylist.
And in an appearance on the Red Table Talk podcast, Ciara gave further details on the breakdown of their relationship to Jada Pinkett Smith.
“I’d have moments when I would be in the shower, I’d be crying. I had a few different settings — crying in the bedroom, crying in the shower. Crying because I’m not in the happiest place, and it hurts what I’m going through,” she said.
“When I was thinking about my son, I know what I want to feel,” she elaborated. “I know the kind of love that I want for us. What I did was – Future (Zahir) was like my teddy bear. So I was like, we gon’ go. We ‘bout to do this thing together. I had to take a couple of times to figure it out, but my dad’s love is what saved me in all my situations, because it would get to a point where I was like, my dad wouldn’t do this to my mom.”
Fortunately for Ciara – and somewhat of a nice sign for cheated on women across the world – Ciara would go on to marry quarterback Russell Wilson in 2016, and has three children with him, named Sienna, Win and Amora. According to gossip magazines, Future Zahir also lives with Ciara and Russell Wilson. The New York City dwelling couple have thrown themselves into charitable causes such as donating half a million dollars to charities in Atlanta, have written a children’s book together, and remain a high profile and committed couple today.
