What does the iconic 2Pac phrase ‘Thug Life’ mean?

2Pac went through many different phases during his career and made many kinds of music as a professional rapper and hip-hop superstar. Much of the deep, profound music he made came in the early 1990s. However, as he progressed and met figures such as Dr Dre and Suge Knight in later years, his music became slightly more aggressive and brash.

Although he changed a little over the years, he remained very consistent in his delivery and remained pretty calm as a person. Furthermore, despite his brushes with the law in 1995, he was civilised when not dealing with the authorities. Still, all of this was overshadowed by the East Coast-West Coast beef between him and Biggie Smalls.

The late legend 2Pac has an exceptional legacy and music that will forever be considered extraordinary. Still, as a person and musician, he remains misunderstood. From his fiery temperament to what he was attempting to achieve with his solemn music, 2Pac seems contradictory retrospectively in many ways.

However, some people are still in the dark about the ‘Thug Life’ aspect of 2Pac’s career and what it actually meant to him. The crew, which is comprised of 2Pac, Big Syke, Mopreme, Macadoshis, and The Rated R, only released one album. Irrespective of this, the phrase and its associated attitude and swagger still exist today. Furthermore, they are pretty powerful.

What does ‘Thug Life’ stand for?

To understand the meaning of ‘Thug Life’ and the impact it has since had on society, one has to know that it was not a word commonly used in hip-hop at the time as a boastful slang term. The term “Thug” had always been extremely negative, demeaning and mostly used as a an adjective to describe young black men.

That said, after the release of his first two albums, 2Pacalypse Now and Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z., 2Pac decided to start his own small collective, Thug Life. The late legend revealed that in his eyes Thug Life stood for “The Hate U Gave Little Infants Fucks Everybody” and reclaimed the term “Thug” so that it represented good, upstanding, yet desperate people who had broken out of a rigged system.

2Pac’s remoulding of the word wasn’t to completely strip it of its original meaning but to highlight that so-called ”Thugs” living a “Thug Life” were intelligent individuals who had risen out of poverty and escaped systematic oppression. The acronym he created, “The Hate U Gave Little Infants Fucks Everybody”, was a political message call-to-action for his counterparts to uplift black children and ensure that one day, they could escape poverty and live a “Thug Life.”

After the creation of his Thug Life collective, B.O.N.E. Enterprises changed their group name to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony; the word has since been adopted by Young Thug, Slim Thug and too many others to mention. 2Pac’s Thug Life project was one of hope as he was a hopeful person who had a vision for the future of America, and despite what many may say about him or how he has been depicted over the years, those who knew him have attested to him being an extremely compassionate, empathetic and emotional person.
