Understanding the beef between Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion is one of the many female rappers who have emerged since the breakthrough of Cardi B in 2016. Following Cardi B’s explosion into the mainstream in 2017 with her debut single ‘Bodak Yellow,’ hip-hop has seen an influx of women looking to topple Nicki Minaj. However, initially, the Houston rhymer was cordial with the Pink Friday musician.

In 2019, Megan Thee Stallion (real name Megan Pete) released her single ‘Hot Girl Summer’ featuring Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign. Moreover, she even sat down for a lengthy Instagram Live discussion with her collaborator. However, since then, female MCs, including Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion and Latto, have distanced themselves from Minaj.

Pete’s new single aims at multiple people and hears the ‘Savage’ lyricist rap, “These hoes don’t be mad at Megan, these hoes mad at Megan’s Law.” This line is aimed at Nicki Minaj and her husband.

Megan’s Law is a legal instrument that makes information about registered sex offenders available to the public. Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty, is a registered sex offender after pleading guilty to attempted rape at the age of 16. He was also recently sentenced to a year of house arrest after failing to register as a sex offender at his new address after moving to California with Minaj.

Minaj is a fiery character known for not taking disrespect, and after hearing this line, she has already recorded a diss track aimed at Pete, which she recently previewed. Taking to Instagram Live, the Queens rhymer shared a snippet which heard her rap, “Bad bitch you like six foot / I call her big foot / The bitch fell off I said get up on your good foot.” This makes reference to a 2020 shooting that saw Pete get shot in the foot by Candian rapper Tory Lanez.

Addressing Megan Thee Stallion’s rapping abilities, Minaj continued, “No, not three Grammys and can’t find the beat! No y’all still chase the bloodclaat beat! Now, I gotta give you your lashings bitch.”

On Instagram Live, she also exclaimed, “You bringing up 30-year-old tea from when this man was a 15-year-old child. You bringing up 30-year-old tea cause no man will ever f*cking love you, and lying on your dead mother.” On X/Twitter, the rapper went on to call Megan a “disgusting serpent [sic]. Megan’s Law. For a free beat, you could hit #Meganraw”.

In other news, Megan Thee Stallion recently signed a new record deal with Warner Music. This is after the Houston emcee formally severed ties with label 1501 Certified Entertainment last year.
