Before we feel the gentle warmth of pitchforks and torches, and the hip hop mob finally descends on our HQ to drag us out of the building and forbid us from ever writing about the genre again, we have to put in the proviso that Justin Bieber, despite his perception, has always been a hip hop fan. Proof of the singer’s love for the genre can be found below within his five favourite rappers of all time.
However, if you were hoping for the former teen idol to have his favourites located in the past, you’d be dead wrong. Bieber proves that, even considering some of the classics, hip hop is in a great place right now as he selects some of the game’s biggest stars.
The list came via Bieber’s appearance on DJ Khaled’s Amazon Music radio show. The First One, the show Khaled hosts, is quickly growing a reputation for having some huge names appear on the broadcast and now, former ‘Bbay’ singer, Justin Bieber has taken to the airwaves and shared an insight into this love of hip hop.
Having already worked with artists such as Chance The Rapper, collaborating with the Chicagoan rapper on his song ‘Holy’ which you can find on his latest release Justice, it makes sense that Bieber should have an opinion on who his favourite rapper might be.
When posed the question by DJ Khaled, Bieber replied: “You know, when you open this conversation there’s always room for, ‘Aw, he can’t believe this.’ But um…I would say, Lil Wayne, Biggie, Eminem, Kanye West and my favourite is Drizzy Drake.” It’s a bustling list of genuine musical superstars.
Of course, Bieber pays homage to some of the stars that have come before, including Biggie Smalls and Eminem, inarguably two of the finest lyricists the hip hop world has ever known. But he also pays tribute to stars of today as he notes Lil Wayne, Ye and Drake as three all-stars still churning out hit records today.
