T.I. facing lawsuit from Sir Jinx over Dr Dre collaboration
T.I. has been hit with a lawsuit from Sir Jinx. The hip-hop producer has sued the Atlanta rapper over his 2016 song, ‘Dope’.
‘Dope’ was released in May 2016 as a collaboration with Marsha Ambrosius. Jinx (real name Anthony Wheaton) is credited as the song’s producer alongside his cousin, Dr Dre.
In a new lawsuit filed on September 28th, 55-year-old Jinx accused T.I. of failing to pay full royalties for the song.
According to Billboard, the filing reads, “Despite repeated demands, including a formal demand letter dated November 11, 2022, defendants have failed and refused to provide an accounting or pay royalties owed to plaintiff.”
They added, “Plaintiff later discovered that ‘Dope’ was released and exploited. Defendants’ continued unauthorised use of ‘Dope’ has resulted in substantial financial harm to plaintiff.”
The lawsuit claims Jinx is owed at least $800,000 from T.I.’s company, although the exact amount of damages he’s demanding is unknown.
Jinx previously sued T.I.’s Grand Hustle company in state court in 2023, which he dropped in April. He also filed a lawsuit in federal court this year, but it was dismissed in August.
‘Dope’ has over 19 million views on YouTube. The song was released as a single but failed to make it onto his Dime Trap album in 2018.
The track compares the feeling of love and drugs. In the second verse, T.I. raps, “This winter shit got me high as a bitch/ Dripping sauce kicking flavour, super fly with the shit/ Don’t need a gram to get laid, an ounce to get paid.”
Jinx was a member of hip-hop trio C.I.A. in the 1980s alongside Ice Cube and K-Dee. He helped produce some of Cube’s early albums, including 1990’s AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted, 1991’s Death Certificate, and 1992’s The Predator.
