The “weird” text message Jay-Z sent to Cam’ron: “I didn’t know how to take that”
For years, Cam’ron and Jay-Z had issues with each other. They fell out and started firing off disses at each other throughout the 2000s and 2010s, but, by 2019, all appeared to be well again—at least in public.
That year the pair appeared to publicly bury the hatchet on stage, performing together during Jay’s B-Sides gig in New York. Fans couldn’t believe it when Cam’ron appeared, given all that had passed between him and Jay, but there he was standing alongside his one-time enemy.
Cam and Jay performed the song ‘Welcome To New York City,’ which appeared on Cam’s 2002 album Come Home with Me and also featured Juelz Santana. For all intents and purposes, it looked like, finally, the pair had mended their relationship after so many years of vitriol.
But all was not quite as it seemed. As Cam’ron revealed on his YouTube show Talk With Flee in 2024, Jay-Z text him after the gig—but, from Cam’s perspective, something was “weird” about his message.
“He texts me, ‘Yo, that was dope last night,’” Cam explained, before revealing what he said back: “That was really dope, I appreciate you guys putting this shit to bed.”
Everything seemed perfectly cordial, but Jay’s next messaged rubbed Cam’ron up the wrong way. “He was like, ‘Yeah, man. See how much shit we can do when n—as stop acting like there’s fake beef out here. That shit slows shit down.’”
Cam’ron didn’t love that message. “I didn’t know how to take that,” he admitted. “I didn’t know what he meant when he text that. I replied, ‘Well, no matter what, you, Dame and Biggs gave me the opportunity to feed my family legally, so I don’t have no problem with it.’”
Cam didn’t want to aggravate the situation, but he wasn’t entirely comfortable with it, either. “But inside, I’m like, ‘Why would he even text that?’” he said. “I don’t know. Even to this day, I don’t have no problem, but I thought that was weird.”
Cam did go on to insist that, in spite of the weirdness created by that message, he and Jay were on good terms. While he admitted that they hadn’t spoken since the gig, he claimed things were fine. “I respect what he’s doing business-wise, and I respect his music,” he said. “Are we good? I hope we’re good!”
