'The Vince Staples Show' announced for Netflix

Rapper Vince Staples will be bringing a brand new scripted comedy series, loosely based on his own life, to Netflix.

Named The Vince Staples Show, the new Netflix series will be helmed by the writer of Black-ish and Girls Trip, Kenya Barris, and will fictionalise the rapper’s rise to industry success after humble beginnings. Based in Long Beach, California, where Staples grew up in real life, it is thought that the plot for the new show will likely follow the rapper’s previous involvement in gang violence.

Expressing his enthusiasm in getting the project off the ground, Stapes states, “I am excited to partner with Netflix and Kenya Barris on The Vince Staples Show”. Continuing, he adds, “This has been something I have been developing for some time, and I am happy it’s coming to fruition”.

Adding to his excitement, Netflix’s head of comedy Tracey Pakosta, also lent her thoughts on the new series, adding, “It’s our mission to work with the best artists in the world. Vince has already established himself as one of the most talented young musicians today and we’re really excited about how his sensibility — and sense of humor — will translate into a unique comedy series”.

Appearing in a leading role for the very first time, the new Netflix series won’t be the first time that Staples has worked in front of the camera, having lent his skills to supporting roles in the coming-of-age comedy-drama Dope, as well as appearing as himself in Issa Rae’s Insecure
