A$AP Rocky lives and dies by the pen. However, there is one “tasteless” occasion which he looks back on with regret where the rapper admits he overstepped the mark.
The track in question is 2015’s ‘Better Things’, where he discusses his relationship with Rita Ora and goes into graphic detail about their sexual encounters. He was unhappy she discussed their time together, and it later emerged Rocky also had a girlfriend.
He explicitly raps on the track, “I swear that bitch Rita Ora got a big mouth, Next time I see her might curse the bitch out, Kicked the bitch out once cause she bed out, Spit my kids out, jizzed up all in her mouth and made the bitch bounce.”
Mentioning the singer by name was a massively unwise move if Rocky cared so much about her “big mouth” talking about their fling. His comments only made more people talk about his personal life, and it was trending on Twitter.
Initially, he stood by his lyrics, and Ora was faced with nasty comments on social media due to the track. Rocky was asked about ‘Better Things’ in every interview, and he offered no apologies.
“I just want to clarify, this isn’t me saying: People don’t go listen to Rita Ora, or she’s an ugly person, or nothing,” he told the BBC’s Annie Mac. “I’m not saying she’s a terrible person, I’m just saying that when I was in a relationship and I did things with her that I wasn’t supposed to do, she had a big mouth.”
Understandably, his comments were not pleasant for Ora to take, but she thought it demonstrated a wider point about how Rocky sees women as sexual objects. “I’m not looking at it like ‘you’re upsetting me’ because I don’t actually give a shit,” she told Hot 97. “I think about it and I don’t want people to think it’s OK to speak about women like that. That’s it.”
She added: “I don’t care what you say about me. I don’t give a flying fuck. That’s just how it is, but you know got to keep it moving. I’m very happy with what I do and I’m proud of who I am and what I represent.”
Her comments seemingly gave Rocky food for thought, and the rapper backtracked from his previous defence of the comments, although he still couldn’t comprehend why people found his love life interesting.
“The Rita thing was tasteless of me,” he told The Guardian. “[But] I’ve got to stand by it, because I did it. I said it. Who gives a fuck about who I’m fucking? Nobody really cares. It’s fun to hear, but who really gives a fuck about who Rita Ora’s fucking?”
If Rocky still wants to keep his relationships so private, it’s going to be hard for him to maintain this now he’s set to become a parent with one of the most famous women in the world.
