The Southern rap icon who called Future a “one-dimensional” and “shit” emcee
Future is often considered one of the most influential rappers from Atalanta. He’s arguably the king of the new school, with some even calling him the godfather of mumble rap. His music gets mixed reviews in hip hop, with some loving him and others hating him.
However, regardless of your opinion, it is undeniable that he has had great success since his career beginnings. With songs such as ‘Mask Off’ going nine times platinum, Future has been described as one of the most influential rappers of his generation.
That said, he is a polarising character, and many people don’t like his style. The ‘Life Is Good’ emcee has shaped the sound of hip-hop over the past 15 years, but many golden-age MCs and industry figures hate the Atlanta rhymer. During a 2022 conversation on the social media app Clubhouse, the iconic music industry exec Wack 100 had a few things to say about Future, and from what fans heard, it sounded like he had a lot to get off his chest.
The conversation, which was recorded, heard Wack 100 say a lot of offensive things about the rapper, and he made it abundantly clear that he has no love for his style or his music overall.
After starting with his opinions on other associated lyricists, Wack changed the conversation topic to his thoughts about Future. Addressing some people in the chat who had accused him of hating on the ‘Mask Off’ rhymer, Wack 100 detailed, “Why you saying I’m hating on Future? I’m just telling you his music is dreary and the same…one-dimensional. I can’t listen or watch that n*gga on no stage for an hour, bro.”
Wack then proceeded to explain that he doesn’t do drugs and insisted that Future couldn’t match Busta Rhymes in terms of stage presence, explaining, “That’s not hate, bro. I don’t think–you gotta understand. I don’t get high…maybe you gotta be high.”
Future has been known as one of the godfathers of so-called ‘Drug Rap’ and, despite his regular glorification of narcotics such as codeine and Percocet, in one interview, he admitted that, behind closed doors, he doesn’t take drugs and never has. Still, his image has led Wack 100 and many others to believe that the Atlanta emcee’s music must be made for drug users.
Speaking about performance skills, Wack told listeners, “We talking about headlining. N*ggas coming behind Busta Rhymes…Future definitely cannot come behind Busta Rhymes’s performance. It’s like from one extreme to the next. Like, Busta gonna have a seizure and aneurysm and a heart attack on stage. This n*gga [Future] comes up same sh*t.”
He finished his rant by telling the listeners, “This n*gga Future, bro, his sh*t is just one pocket, and that’s just what it is. N*gga, even on the Drake tour, they didn’t let Future do a full set. Drake came out for 45 [minutes]. Future came out for 25 [minutes], and then Drake came back out! I’m telling you. I started nodding out during Future’s set!”
