The rappers who love Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift has become a global superstar and, the most influential pop star in the world. Although Beyoncé is still relevant, at 43 years old, she is not as prevalent in the mainstream as Swift and the former country singer is selling out arenas worldwide and has immense power.
Beyoncé has engaged with rappers for the entirety of her career, to the extent that she married Jay-Z. However, she is not the only pop star with admirers in hip-hop. In fact, more and more MCs are beginning to open up about their affinity for Taylor Swift and her music.
Due to the demographic of her fan base, the ‘Bad Blood’ singer has been associated with young girls. Therefore, many lyricists have hesitated to embrace her for fear of mockery. However, things have recently begun to change.
One rapper who has been more than happy to admit that he is a supporter of Taylor Swift is UGK legend Bun B. Last year, the Houston icon met Swift for the first time in New York City and was emotionally moved by their exchange and loved her humility.
The UGK met the leader of the Swifties and after, much to the surprise of many black Americans, he compared the meeting to the time he met Barack Obama and Beyoncé, who both made him feel “seen and heard.”
After posing for a picture, Bun B took to Instagram and uploaded the photo, under which he wrote, “About last night… got a call in the middle of dinner to meet Matt from @astorclubnyc at an Uno game.” He continued, “Random. Turns out it’s @questlove party with food from cannabis chef/educator @thechefnikki which was amazing.”
Bun B detailed how the photo opportunity came around, “Quest calls @jazzbeezy, who I hadn’t sent in years. On my way out he says ‘I have to have a picture with you and Taylor.’ Who turns out to be THE Taylor. As in @taylorswift who couldn’t have been more kind and personable. I’ve only ever met 2 other people who make you feel this seen and heard in an interaction before and that’s @barackobama and @beyonce.” He then asked his followers, “Does this make me a Swiftie?”
Bun B is far from the only hip-hop legend who has embraced Swift. Public Enemy emcee Flavor Flav has proudly shared his love for the ‘Cruel Summer’ vocalist and wore a T-shirt with her lyrics on it at the 2023 iHeartRadio Music Awards. Furthermore, during an interview on the red carpet, the Public Enemy icon called himself a Swiftie.
Explaining his affinity for the singer, he detailed, “I’m a Swiftie, as you can tell! I’m here to support her! I’m here to support my girl,” he boasted. “I wanna meet her, too. One day.”
Flavor Flav did eventually get to meet Swift and connect with her fans during one of her concert stops in June. Flav also sported a wrist full of custom Swiftie bracelets.
