The one singer who was supposed to meet Mac Miller the day he died
The late Mac Miller was one of hip hop’s most prominent white MCs. With hits such as ‘Party On Fifth Ave’ and ‘Self Care’, Miller was undeniably a force to be reckoned with when it came to lyricism and bringing good vibes.
Miller, from the outside, had a lot going for him and was even happily dating pop star Ariana Grande for a period. Nonetheless, behind closed doors, the young artist struggled with substance abuse and chronic depression. The two, in conjunction, would ultimately lead to his death in 2018.
However, his good-natured personality and authenticity made him an excellent person to be around, and one person he was incredibly close with was the famous Oakland R&B singer Kehlani.
Kehlani has been highly successful as a musician, and with hits such as ‘Gangsta’ and ‘You Should Be Here,’ she is no stranger to the top of the charts. However, akin to Miller, she often found herself in the headlines due to her high-profile relationships with figures such as YG and Kiara Russell.
However, to escape the craziness of media firestorms, she frequently confided in Miller, whose life was cut short by a tragic death and in an interview with Teen Vogue, the vocalist opened up about it and how his death affected her on a personal level.
The pair were close friends, and during her interview with Teen Vogue in 2020, Kehlani unveiled that they had even planned to get lunch together on the very same day that he died. In fact, between 2018 and 2020, Kehlani lost three of her friends, including Lexii Alijai and Chynna Rogers to drugs.
When reflecting on why she and Miller had such a close connection, the vocalist explained that they got on well because they seemed to think about fame in the same way. They both focused on creating music and being grateful for the opportunity to do so rather than portraying the lifestyle of the rich and famous.
Delving deeper into this, Kehlani explained, “I think it’s the fact that we’re like-minded. This industry tends to split [people] in two. One side being of people who care about things like status and impressions and care about amounts of money or jewellery the lifestyle. The other half is people who are just grateful to be successful that are just happy to be here.”
She loved him for that, so she often met up with him behind the scenes. However, she was genuinely shocked when she found out that on the exact day she was supposed to meet him, doctors were pronouncing him dead after an accidental drug overdose of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol. This had an extreme impact on Kehlani, who has become even more elusive over the years.
