The one motto Big Sean lives by: “I’m very spiritual”

The one principle that shapes the career of Big Sean is that belief creates, and his motto, “I am very spiritual”, is not a reference to anything vague but delineates his attitude to music, business and his personal life.

At the very beginning, Sean was in line with the law of attracting good energy, noting in interviews, “you must make your own world and you should not allow anybody to tell you anything”. His spirituality revolves around energy, visualisation and manifestation but he is no dogmaticist, preferring just to adhere to a set of rules: trust the mind, then concentrate the energy, and let the results be.

The approach was manifested earlier in his ascendancy. As a teenager in 2005, in Detroit, Sean went outside a radio station and convinced Kanye West to listen to one of his freestyles. That was the point of his deal with GOOD Music, which, according to him, was not chance but the product of persuasion and planning, attributing chance to regular spiritual practice and non-acceptance of externally imposed restrictions.

Such an attitude informed his further career choices, whereby he rejected college scholarships in music, focusing attention on creative development when his peers transferred to traditional roles. He used these choices in his music, establishing a brand based on patience, self-awareness, and internal alignment.

These values can be traced in his lyrics as well, with ‘Bounce Back’ handily becoming an anthem of survival, ‘Deep Reverence’ upholding the importance of mental health, and ‘Blessings’ advancing gratitude as a vital component to personal development. These are not themes of effect but are central to his brand; the catalog of Sean is characterised by positive reinforcement and deliberate lyricism.

In addition to music, Sean has invested in purpose-based projects, establishing the Sean Anderson Foundation in 2012 to help underserved communities in Detroit by financing access to studios, education programmes and mental health facilities. The scope of this pattern of action based on belief and responsibility was stretched further through his participation in the Flint water crisis response.

He has also discussed mental health in his interviews, noting that there were times in his life when he felt that “he is struggling with something even though he has been successful in his career”. At those stages, Sean resorted to meditation, therapy, and journaling to find his focus again. The sources that impacted his practices, because he was exposed to such books early in life, are The Four Agreements and The Secret, which he attributes to influencing his worldview.

His personal growth and business strategy are consistent with what he says publicly, evidenced in his 2025 book, Go Higher: Five Practices to Purpose, Success, and Inner Peace, which codifies the spiritual practices he has been relying on during the past two decades. It offers his own motto as a useful guideline for other people and not just as an idealistic faith to blindly follow.

The spirituality of Big Sean is the brand, and he has developed a career based on intent that he has carried through into his music, philanthropy, and social oratory. The primary motto of his business is to believe in your vision and live, and that has never changed despite the increase in the scope of his platform. Both the creative and the commercial results can be viewed as an implementation of a single idea in all the channels based on the tenet that energy is currency, and belief is strategy.
