The music that inspired Drake album 'Scorpion'

Drake is one of the most successful rappers of this generation. With four Grammy Awards and 13 BET awards, he is one of the most decorated hip hop artists of all time, and for good reason.

Drake is versatile, and from album to album, he experiments with his sound and evolves, drawing on a range of influences. The Canadian artist has openly admitted to being influenced by the UK drill scene in recent times, but who else has impacted his music making?

Drake’s 2017 album Scorpion was nothing short of sensational, and, musically, it offered a diverse range of his skills. Pulling in themes from multiple genres, including trap and house music, there was a bit of something for everybody.

Reflecting on his work, the Toronto rapper took to Instagram to reveal some of the songs and artists he had been listening to during the album’s recording process, posting: “Thank you to all the artists that inspired me on the studio drives”.

One noticeable revelation from the list of inspirations is Drake’s love for UK hip hop as well as American, with artists such as Loski and Octavian both making an appearance in the self-compiled list, with Loski’s ‘Call Me Loose’ and Octavian’s ‘Hands’ highlighted specifically as songs the rapper appreciated.

Another noticeable trend was Drake’s consumption of classic 1990s hip hop, with ‘All Eyez On Me’ from Tupac and ‘Life After Death’ from The Notorious BIG, both featuring on the list of inspiration.

Another artist that the rapper acknowledged was Smiley_61st, as he prompted his followers to go and stream the Buy.Or.Buy EP.

Drake’s musical taste proved to be vast and varied, with even genres such as afrobeat making an appearance. Other artists on the list include Tekno, Starboy, The City Girls, Gunna, 03 Greedo and Booggz.

By showcasing his influences, we can only assume the rapper wanted his fans to understand the album’s sonics on a deeper level and see it as a culmination of different styles and cultures coming together in one melting pot of an album.
