The huge role André 3000 turned down to avoid being typecast: “I can’t do it”

Former Outkast member André 3000 is known for his music and his amazing rap skills. Although he hasn’t released a full-length hip-hop album since 2006, the emcee is still respected as one of the most innovative and creative artists the genre has produced. That said, although he made a moderately successful transition into acting during the mid-2000s, on one occasion, the ‘Hey Ya’ singer turned down a huge role in order to avoid being typecast.

The lyricist decided to enter Hollywood to stimulate his creativity and push the boundaries. Initially, he found it challenging, and he liked it. In a 2005 interview with the entertainment blog IGN, André 3000 explained, “The challenge is to play a normal human being, being that I’m an entertainer. People put you on this star-type of pedestal, and you need to actually break yourself down. To be a normal human being is a kind of therapy. I dig it.”

In 2003, André appeared in his first film, Hollywood Homicide. Although it had the star power of Harrison Ford leading the charge, critics and fans didn’t receive it well. Furthermore, the rapper’s character didn’t play a big part in the plot.

However, in 2006, three years after Outkast’s massive success with Speakerboxxx/The Love Below and all of its Grammy wins and multi-platinum records, he was presented with the script of an extremely well-known film: Dreamgirls. The star-studded cast was mind-blowing, and the film was a box-office smash upon release.

It starred Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Beyoncé, and Jennifer Hudson, all of whom were recruited especially by the director Bill Condon. The movie was so good that it won awards for its cast and earned Jennifer Hudson her first Oscar.

However, few know that André 3000 was approached to fill the role that Eddie Murphy ended up playing, the role of an eccentric, black musician with flair who helped the ‘Dreamgirls’ navigate the music industry.

Unfortunately for the movie’s director, Bill Condon, that same year, André had starred in a similar film about a gifted musician struggling to make it in the record business. Directed by Barry Barber, the movie starred Terrence Howard, Paula Patton, and his friend Big Boi.

Dreamgirls was set in the 1960s, and Idlewild was set in 1935. Both were musicals. As such, he wanted to avoid being typecast as a black American living in the past and wanted something more current set in the present.

Speaking with ContactMusic, the Outkast member recalled, “Someone just sent me the script for Dreamgirls with Beyoncé, but I can’t do it. The director wanted to meet, and I’d really love to work with this director, but I just finished a musical, and it was a period piece. I don’t want to get typecast.” However a few years later, the rapper would find himself ina similar setting, taking on the role of Jimi Hendrix in the notorious biopic.

The last venture André 3000 made into acting was as Elliot Lash in the 2022 Comedy-Drama White Noise, directed by Noah Baumbach, which received an award at the renowned Venice Film Festival.
