The greatest living rapper according to Drake

He may well have become one of the most recognisable names in hip hop but Drake doesn’t think he’s the greatest rapper alive. The Toronto hero has made a name for himself with a unique flow that reverberates around the charts and continues to be seen as one of the finest around. But even he wouldn’t call himself the greatest.

Drake, widely credited as being a pioneering figure in the popularisation of the Toronto sound, has established himself as one of the prominent and influential rappers of his class. That doesn’t mean that he hasn’t, like other hip hop heads, mulled over who he thinks is the GOAT. While over the years he has given many selections that are pretty standard, there’s one that has piqued our interest as he recently shared the news on Instagram of a new OVO signee.

“Perfection to me is, I walk away from a situation and say, ‘I did everything I could do right there. There was nothing more that I could do’,” Drake once said in a quote that typifies his approach to making music. “I was a hundred per cent like the meter was at the top. There was nothing else I could have done. You know? Like, I worked as hard as I possibly could have. That’s perfection,” he added.

In regards to perfection, there are five rappers who Drake has previously said he believes are as close to that label as possible. As part of an Instagram comment earlier this year, Drake selected Jay Z, Biggie, Lil Wayne, Andre 3000 and a little known Toronto rapper Young Tony, AKA OVO Hush.

However, only last month, Drake seemed to add one more name to the list as he shared a video of Rick Ross, labelling the hip hop icon: “the greatest living rapper”. Considering his previous selections, we’d guess it will need to be taken with a pinch of salt.
