The country singer who out-smoked Snoop Dogg
Snoop Dogg has become a lot more than just a rapper throughout his career. Sure, he started off as a West Coast prodigy, but he has evolved into so much more than that over the years. If you had shown him what his career would turn into after he released his debut album, Over The Counter, he would have laughed. However, through all of the changes, both the good and the bad, there is one constant that he would be happy to see there.
Snoop started his career at the height of gangster rap. He would write about his experiences of gang life where he grew up, creating exciting narratives throughout his music that spoke of murder, drugs, alcohol and parties. They were captivating, even for people who couldn’t connect with his words. Pair that with his excellent vocal tone and smooth flow; it’s hardly surprising that he became a star.
It wasn’t just Snoop’s music that made him relevant, though. While that was, of course, a big part of it, he was also incredibly charismatic, with a personality that people could connect with and wanted to see more of. Granted, he can still tour and sell out arenas relatively easily, but he is also commonly known as an entertainer, someone funny and approachable that people like to see more of.
In addition, his music has altered over time. While he is still most commonly known as a rapper, he has ventured into reggae and gospel music and created records that lean more on R&B sounds than rap. On his 2015 album, Bush, Snoop teamed up with Pharrell to make much more upbeat and catchy tunes like ‘Peaches N Cream’, ‘California Roll’, and ‘So Many Pros’.
Regardless of what avenue he has gone down with his career, though, one thing remains throughout, and that’s his love of smoking weed. You’ll rarely see photos of Snoop Dogg or videos of him on stage without some kind of joint nearby. His chilled-out persona matches the smoking well, and he’s an advocate for the drug, preaching the positive effects that it can have on people.
He is so synonymous with the drug now that Jimmy Kimmel said he would put Snoop Dogg on the Mount Rushmore of weed. Laughing at his placement, Snoop then contributed some suggestions that he thought should go alongside him.
Most rappers are asked about which of their fellow emcees should be up on the illustrious rock formation, but Snoop’s position as the Godfather of Ganja has made him the go-to voice when talking about weed. However, he believes there is one man who perhaps takes the crown ahead of him.
The first names he offered up were Bob Marley and Cheech and Chong. Kimmel said he doesn’t think Cheech and Chong would be on the mountain now, with Snoop rebutting, “They were the first faces on the mountain, though,” he said, “They the ones who showed us where the mountain was.”
Finally, Snoop offered up one final name that came with its own shocking revelation attached. “Willie P Nelson is definitely on there,” he said, “And by the way, Willie Nelson is the only person whose ever out-smoked Snoop Dogg… I had to hit the time-out button.”
Few people can out-smoke Snoop, so if you ever find yourself in a rotation with Cheech, Fhong, Snoop and Willie Nelson, simply hold on to the earth and hope you don’t fall off.
