Texas rapper killed by Fort Worth police officer
A Fort Worth rapper was shot and killed by police over the weekend.
26-year-old 88Dub (real name Elijah Mayo) lost his life on May 16th after the Fort Worth Police Department claimed he pointed a gun at officers.
According to CBS News, the incident took place just after midnight on Wiman Drive near Eastland Street.
Police say they responded to reports of gunfire and heard more bullets being fired upon their arrival. They allege that they confronted a man who was holding a gun and ordered him to let go of his weapon.
From there, officers claim he refused to drop the firearm and proceeded to point his gun at the officers. One of the officers then opened fire on the man.
Fort Worth Police say they attempted to provide medical aid, along with the Fort Worth Fire Department. However, he was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.
Following the incident, the man was identified as 88Dub, who died in his neighbour’s front garden. His father, Emmitt Mayo, said that he had gone to a neighbourhood party to perform, but didn’t make it to the stage.
“My son didn’t deserve to get gunned down like that,” he began. “They said, ‘Well, we just had a shooting over here.’ So he asked the guy, could I still get my money right for his show and his flyer? And … they had a little altercation behind that.”
Mayo claimed that his son tried to escape the situation when police arrived. “They fired shots at him first,” he said. “He returned fire to protect himself.”
88Dub, from Texas, is best known for songs like ‘T4L Flow’, ‘Magic Trick’, ‘Walkdown’, and ‘Run in My Vains’, which have millions of streams on Spotify.
