SZA explains how she got fired from a strip club
SZA has explained how she got fired from a strip club before she became famous.
The TDE singer worked several jobs before making music full-time, including waitressing, selling Sephora cosmetics, and working at a strip club.
This week, a Threads user posted a video of Trinidad James’ video for his 2012 hit ‘All Gold Everything’, writing in the caption, “This song came out when I was in a very good place.”
SZA took to the comments to reveal she has both positive and negative memories of the song. On the one hand, she lost her job; on the other, it paved the way for her music career.
“Fired from the strip club for choosing to open up for him after this came out,” she wrote. “Lowkey a liberation anthem.”
This isn’t the first time she’s referenced working at a strip club, mentioning her old job on ‘Broken Clocks’ from her 2017 album, Ctrl. In the song, she says, “Jump quick to a paycheck, runnin’ back to the strip club/ I’m never goin’ back, never goin’ back.”
Speaking to Elle in 2023, SZA admitted that she had regrets about going against her parents’ wishes and bartending at the strip club. “I really disrespected my parents for a long time,” she said. “Me telling my mom I would rather go run in the streets and bartend at the strip club so I can pay for studio time [than go to school]. It’s crazy.”
During an interview in 2020, James reflected on the success of ‘All Gold Everything’ and what it was like to perform it for the first time.
“When you make a song, you’re only giving your perspective as much as you can give it,” he told Revolt. “Once you give your perspective on the track and put it out, everything else is left up to the consumer to receive it and give their perspective back about it.”
He continued, “Imagine me, being a new artist, making a new track, putting it out, and then going to perform it, which is a whole other medium. There are people who are really good in the studio, but the stage is a completely different animal. With that being said, I got to see when you really got the people, it’s going to show on stage.”
