SZA reveals she’s been diagnosed with autism

SZA has revealed that she’s been diagnosed with autism.

The ‘Kill Bill’ singer took to social media over the weekend to share a scan of a doctor’s evaluation of her.

In the caption, she wrote, “Finally took the time n got formally diagnosed .. Asperger’s / high functioning autism / smart than u n*ggas so stop playing in my face cause pattern recognition told me and I WILL get to the bottom of it thanks.”

She added, “Pretty sure this is why I’m taking Ai so personally btw lol. And also why I’m in every comment section.”

SZA shared the post on her Instagram burner account, @notmusicatalliswear. The doctor’s summary states that she “presents with a history, patterning of scores and behaviours on examination that are quite consistent with Autism Spectrum Disorder.”

It continues, “[SZA] has a qualitative impairment in reciprocal social interaction, as both self-reported and observed by her examiner. Her mother also noted these traits when [SZA] was a child, although they were not as evident.”

The note goes on to point out her battle with sensory defensiveness and the way she deals with social situations.

“[SZA] also has marked sensory defensiveness,” it reads. “She is sensitive to feel of clothing, sound, taste, and touch. She has developed numerous admirable coping strategies for ‘passing’ when in social situations. This takes an enormous amount of energy for her and leaves her feeling quite anxious.”

It adds, “Cognitively, [SZA] is function in the superior range in fluid reasoning. She is also in the gifted range linguistically. She is a quite articulate woman. She has more consistency in her ability to engage in social perception both on standardised tests and based on her self-report.”

While acknowledging her anxiety, the doctor recognised her ability to progress her career and creativity. “[SZA] is experiencing a severe degree of anxiety, overall,” the note reads. “She is quite aware of this and endorsed this on standardised scales. At the same time, [SZA] has made remarkable advances in her career and is an extremely creative woman. She has many personal gifts.”
