Snoop Dogg to carry Olympic torch at Paris 2024
Hip-hop royalty Snoop Dogg has been confirmed as a torchbearer of the Olympic game ahead of the opening ceremony in Paris on July 26th.
While Snoop seems an unconventional choice, it will provide an entertaining moment nonetheless. He is set to make his way across the streets of Saint-Denis in the north of Paris with the torch in-hand before it arrives at the Stade de France Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremony. Other notable figures who will be carrying the torch at the same leg include Laetitia Casta, MC Solaar and Sergey Bubka.
The torch has been making its way to the French capital over the last two months, and several high-profile names, from legendary football manager Arsene Wenger to Hollywood icon Halle Berry, have helped the famous item reach Paris.
In addition to assisting with the torch’s journey to the Stade de France Olympic Stadium, Snoop will aslo be in Paris for the duration of the games to work as a broadcaster for NBC and Peacock.
Although Snoop may lack the athletic experience of his fellow broadcasting team, he will bring charisma and humour to the panel. Furthermore, while rap may be his forte, the Olympics occupies a special place in his heart.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, he previously explained of his affinity with the sporting occasion: “I grew up watching the Olympics and am thrilled to see the incredible athletes bring their A-game to Paris. It’s a celebration of skill, dedication and the pursuit of greatness.”
The rapper continued, “We’re going to have some amazing competitions and, of course, I will be bringing that Snoop style to the mix. It’s going to be the most epic Olympics ever, so stay tuned, and keep it locked. Let’s elevate, celebrate and make these games unforgettable, smoke the competition, and may the best shine like gold. Peace and Olympic LOVE, ya dig?”
Snoop is already in Europe ahead of the event, and last week, during an intimate performance with Dr Dre in London, the duo were joined by Eminem.
The concert was a promotional effort to help spread the word about Dre and Snoop’s newest venture, ‘Gin and Juice’ named after the 1994 Doggystyle hit of the same name. The pair have been doing gigs to promote their new brand, and during a London performance in Flipper’s World, they decided to bring out long-time collaborator and dear friend, Marshall Mathers.
