Snoop Dogg reveals how Ice Cube inspired his role on ‘The Chronic’

Snoop Dogg first erupted onto the scene in 1992 alongside Dr Dre on ‘Deep Cover’ and later that year, he would feature on ‘Nuthin But A G Thang’. Both songs were huge, and ever since, the Long Beach artist has been a cultural icon and a hip-hop treasure.

However, another West Coast emcee partly moulded Snoop’s introduction to the world on The Chronic. That said, in an Instagram post celebrating the anniversary of Ice Cube‘s groundbreaking solo album, Death Certificate, Snoop detailed how it influenced and inspired his style when he came to recording verses for Dr Dre.

Posting the project’s artwork on Instagram, Snoop wrote, “This was the dopest shit in 1991.” He acknowledged the album’s 33rd anniversary on October 29th and told fans that it impacted him in a big way, adding, “[It] Inspired a lot of my lyrics for The Chronic album.”

Snoop then thanked some West Coast icons who collaborated with Ice Cube on the LP, shouting out DJ Pooh and Sir Jinx. In a 2020 interview with Soren Baker on the Unique Access podcast, Sir Jinx emphasised that DJ Pooh was the “captain” of Death Certificate.

Expressing his admiration for DJ Pooh, Sir Jinx told Baker, “DJ Pooh took it to another level because he was a professional. For him to come in on Death Certificate, it was like my older brother.” Pooh had previously worked with unsung California heroes like King Tee and more.

Snoop paid tribute to Death Certificate because it helped him in his first collaboration with Dr Dre. That said, the pair have decided to join forces again for their collaborative album, Missionary. The project will arrive on December 13th and, in the lead-up to the release, Snoop Dogg released a comedic trailer.

The visual snippet shows two Mormons in shirts walking up to a grand house under the pretence of spreading the word of God. However, they are then met by a curvy lady in lingerie who booked them for “missionary work,” but they are not what she was expecting.

During an appearance at the Bloomberg Screentime conference, Snoop Dogg unveiled the album’s Missionary’s star-studded features, telling fans, “This new record is gonna put me in a position to probably have that final big stadium tour ’cause there’s a lot of features on this record that I’m excited about that are big-name artists.”

He even revealed he got a country verse revealing, “I got a feature from Jelly Roll and Sting. I’m so happy that me and Sting got a record that’s so good.” Many are excited about Dr Dre’s and Snoop’s first joint album since the 1990s.
