Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre’s new album flops in chart
Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre’s new album Missionary is set to debut on the Billboard 200 chart despite disappointing first-week sales. The longtime collaborators reunited for a whole new album that served as the sequel to Snoop’s 1993 album Doggystyle, but it won’t be seeing the same amount of commercial success.
HITSDailyDouble reports that Missionary, released on December 13th, is projected to sell just 36,000 units when the charts are eventually updated. It’s likely to debut at number 20 on the Billboard 200, which would be the lowest position of Dre’s career. Snoop’s last album, Bacc on Death Row, struggled to break into the top 100 albums, peaking at 104.
Released on Death Row Records, which Snoop acquired in 2022, Missionary features a strong supporting cast with appearances from the likes of Eminem, 50 Cent, Method Man, Tom Petty, Sting, Jelly Roll, Jhené Aiko and BJ The Chicago Kid. During a recent interview with Complex, Dre spoke about the demand for him and Snoop on a record together, describing their collaboration as “magic.”
“We know what it is. Everybody loves it when we’re together,” he said. “There’s a certain synergy that comes together when we get on stage or when we get in the studio together. It’s just some kind of magic that happens.”
He continued, “I realised this when we were working on ‘Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang‘ and it was this one part that came in when I realised how much our vocals work together. And I’m like, ‘Oh shit, this is like a synergy or something that is really fucking special.’ So I just ran with it from there.”
It took Snoop more than three decades to release the sequel to his classic debut album, which is considered one of the best hip-hop albums of all time and served as a platform for the Long Beach rapper to take the world by storm.
In comparison, Doggystyle debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 806,858 copies in its first week with features from the likes of Nate Dogg, Warren G, Kurupt, The D.O.C. and Tha Dogg Pound. It broke the record for a debuting artist and became the fastest-selling hip-hop album ever at the time.
