Snoop Dogg criticised for performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration
Snoop Dogg performed at the Crypto Ball to celebrate Donald Trump’s second inauguration on January 20th and has received backlash for his attendance. While the media was banned from the event, videos surfaced of Snoop performing on stage, and photos also emerged of the rapper posing with far-right figures.
Acclaimed writer and activist Kevin Powell is among the most prominent names to have criticised Snoop for supporting Trump. “I interviewed Snoop Dogg when I was working for Quincy Jones’ Vibe magazine, one of the first major cover stories of that, the first cover story for Snoop ever,” he said.
He continued to tell TMZ, “He has a long history in relationship to the community. I mean, hip-hop was created by poor people, working-class people, the same poor people that Dr. King told us not to forgive, are the same people who created hip-hop.”
Powell went on to call out other rappers such as Soulja Boy, Rick Ross, Waka Flocka Flame and Nelly for also getting behind Trump. “What they are trading in, Snoop as a rapper, Soulja Boy, Rick Ross, Waka Flocka, Nelly, they’re trading in their very constituents for a bag of money,” he said. “That’s essentially what’s happened here … I think there’s a sea change of lack of values across America, period.”
Former Barack Obama staffer, Jon Cooper, also called out Snoop on X (formerly known as Twitter), writing, “Who would have guessed that Snoop Dogg would end up being one of the ‘Uncle Tom ass n*ggers’ he himself railed against not long ago? What a fucking sellout.”
Snoop once bashed Trump, dropping a song called ‘M.A.C.A. (Make America Crip Again)‘ in 2017. He rapped in the song, “The president says he wants to make America great again/ Fuck that shit, we going to make America Crip again/ Don’t you look strange having all that power but you won’t make change.”
Years ago, he also addressed Trump’s divisive actions and statements during an interview with Billboard, telling the publication about some of his issues. “The [Muslim] ban that this motherfucker tried to put up, him winning the presidency, police being able to kill motherfuckers and get away with it, people being in jail for weed for 20, 30 years,” he said.
