The crazy fee Snoop Dogg charges for a feature
It’s not exactly breaking news that hip-hop artists like their dough. They don’t hide the riches of their labour across their personal styling, and their lyrics don’t shy away from declaring it, either. “With my mind on my money and my money on my mind,” Snoop Dogg raps in ‘Gin and Juice’.
Not that that was a difficult quote to find. The data hasn’t necessarily been crunched on the matter, so this is perhaps somewhat hyperbolic. But there are maybe millions and millions of hip-hop songs about money. And at least a few dozen by Snoop.
So let’s listen to what the man has to say. “Money, money is everything,” he says on the cryptically named track ‘Money’. “’Cause’ you know I’m all about the hoes, money, and clout,” he raps on a song called – guess what – ‘Hoes, Money, and Clout’. This is a man who knows he likes money. Good for him!
Therefore, it will come as no surprise that the Doggfather charges the big bucks for a feature. Even if he didn’t like the green bills so much, why wouldn’t he? Widely regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop artists in the history of the genre, and by far one of the most iconic, with an inimitable charm and tone, it’s nothing more than a matter of supply and demand.
It’s an economic law that the West Coast rapper is all too aware of himself. Speaking on the Full Send Podcast in 2022, Snoop revealed just how much he requires for a guest verse on a song. “You’ll get about 16 bars,” he said. “And when it’s time to do the video, I need to get another $250,000 up out of you. And you only got an hour, so get to filming.”
A hefty price tag, but one that studios are, evidently, all too happy to pay. Snoop Dogg has amassed over 1,000 guest appearances throughout his career, working with everyone from fellow hip-hop legends Pharrell and Kendrick Lamar to pop stars like Mariah Carey and Katy Perry. He even went viral for a Bic lighter advert that also starred Martha Stewart.
He has entrepreneurial talents beyond just charging a hefty quarter million for 16 bars, too. His business ventures include projects in media production, youth football, and even his own cannabis companies: Leafs by Snoop and Casa Verde Capital.
The latter is a particularly interesting business move from the rapper: it is a venture capital firm that was co-founded in 2015, and specifically focuses on investments within the cannabis sector. This extends to the whole line of the roll out, from cultivation to technology.
With a net worth estimated to be around $160 to 165 million, Snoop has, naturally, got his fingers in pies beyond that of the musical variety. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t still constitute a bulk: key assets of his wealth include ownership of Death Row Records, which he acquired in 2022.
Snoop Dogg raps on ‘Get My Money’, “Get my money, bitch, make it fast.” With a career that spans decades, the money may not have only come as fast as his flow, but certainly has managed to stick around, too.
