“That was my girl!”: why Snoop Dogg was close to the Queen of England
Snoop Dogg has always had some strange relationships and formed various unlikely friendships. Whether it’s his friendship with Martha Stewart or his willingness to give Ed Sheeran a Death Row chain, that said he once asserted that he was close with Queen Elizabeth II of the UK.
Despite the British Royal Family’s highly private nature and their well-known mantra “never complain, never explain,” Snoop Dogg has repeatedly stated that the late Queen Elizabeth II loved him and his music. A claim which many dispute.
After a UK broadcaster suggested in jest that the Prince of Wales, Prince William, was a Snoop Dogg fan, the Long Beach legend responded, “Well, the Queen was a fan too.” He then paid tribute to the late Queen, stating, “Rest in peace to the Queen, that was my girl. You know what I’m saying? So, just may want to go up [to the palace] and, you know, see what you do, let me in or not.”
The Queen once overturned a decision to stop Snoop Dogg from entering the UK in 1994. Although Doggystyle had already been released, and Snoop was a star, at this time, he was still on trial in the US for murder due to an incident which resulted in someone being shot by his bodyguard.
Snoop was later acquitted, but it was a career-threatening moment. While he was being held, the Queen intervened to have him released, and during his 2024 conversation with Jordan North in London, he reflected on the moment the late monarch helped him, recalling, “When they tried to kick me out of England, the Queen made a comment that her grandbabies loved Snoop Doggy Dogg, and he had done no wrong in the UK, so she gave me permission to be here.”
He continued, “Those grandbabies grew up to be Prince William and Harry, so I had influence on them, and they had influence on their grandmother, which enabled me to get into this beautiful country. They love my music, and it is what it is. There’s a mutual love and respect.”
American citizens have always had a fascination with the British royal family, and when the iconic Queen died, it was a big shift. In 2023, when King Charles III was preparing for his coronation, Snoop reached out to the King to see if he would welcome a performance.
In an interview with The Sun, the star stated, “His Royal Highness, meet His Rollin’ Highness. I’m down to perform at the coronation. Make it happen.” Snoop Dogg also told the Daily Express, “Tell Charles to give me a holla! The Queen was already my girl, the Queen was my gal, she was my kind of gal. So all the Prince has to do is say, ‘Check it out, Dogg, I need you in the house’, and I’ll show up and show out!”
It will remain unknown whether or not the Queen actually “loved” Snoop Dogg. However, the question of Prince William and Prince Harry being fans of Snoop Dogg is yet to be answered and can be if they dare to reply.
