Rapper Snoop Dogg is finally getting a biopic.
On Wednesday (November 9th), Universal Pictures announced that they are developing a movie about Snoop Dogg’s life and career that will be produced by the hip-hop legend. It will be written by Joe Robert Cole, the co-writer of the Black Panther films, and directed by Allen Hughes, the mind behind Menace II Society.
“I waited a long time to put this project together because I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest movie company I could partner with that could understand the legacy that I’m trying to portray on screen, and the memory I’m trying to leave behind,” Snoop Dogg explained in a statement. “It was the perfect marriage. It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni.”
Notably, Universal brought the story of pioneering gangsta rap group NWA to life in 2015’s Straight Outta Compton, and before that, the Eminem classic 8 Mile in 2002, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Elsewhere, Cole opined that the studio “has proven they can guide a movie like this to something special”.
Donna Langley, the chair of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, said that she met Snoop shortly after he purchased Death Row Records. This came only a few days before the rapper performed at the Super Bowl halftime show in February alongside Dr Dre, Eminem, Mary J Blige and Kendrick Lamar.
Snoop Dogg broke through in the early 1990s and became one of West Coast rap’s pioneers, collaborating with Dr. Dre and others. He released classics such as 1993’s Doggystyle and 1996’s Tha Doggfather before gradually becoming a broader cultural icon and starring in films such as Training Day, Starsky & Hutch and Soul Plane.
