Skepta announced as subject of new documentary

It has been confirmed that Skepta will be the subject of a new documentary. H.Wood Group, the hospitality group co-founded by John Terzian and Brian Toll, has decided to branch out into multimedia production. One of their first projects will be what they described as a “stirring documentary” about the British grime rapper.

The project already has a good team. It will be co-directed by BAFTA nominee Hector Dockrill, while Terzian, Toll, and Jeremy Allen will head up production duties alongside Dwight Okechukwu. H.Wood Media and 1PLUS1 Production will both be involved in the project.

Terzian spoke about the new branch of the H.Wood Group and their documentary, saying, “H.Wood media is about telling the stories behind the personalities who shape culture, and Skepta is undeniably the perfect subject for us.”

He continued, “His story is one of modern identity, the immigrant experience of ‘growing up in a place that is not your home’, mental health and finding one’s true self.” They look forward to telling the rappers, “Emotional and inspiring journey,” saying it will, “Resonate with audiences around the world, and we are honoured he entrusted us to tell his story and work with us on future storytelling.”

Okechuku shared his excitement, saying he is “Thrilled and excited about our new partnership with powerhouse H.Wood Media…” He went on to say how excited he is to start working with the variety of people on board with H.Wood Media and how their collaborative projects mark the beginning of something big.

“As we embark on this collaborative journey, I am truly excited about the endless possibilities that lie ahead,” he said, “I find Jeremy, John and Brian very inspiring and supportive. It’s a great pleasure to be working with partners that move so efficiently.”

Skepta is no stranger to the silver screen. Earlier this year, he released his short film, Tribal Mark, which he co-directed with Okechukwu. He has also revealed plans to expand the short film into a franchise, marking the beginning of what could be an exciting series of short films.

“I hope that the next thing is the feature film,” he said in an interview with Variety, “I want to do the first one, and then I want to step back so I can let another black actor come and do it. We would love to have a fast forward of ‘Tribal Mark’ that goes into the future of his life, and it’s Denzel Washington. I’m shouting out to Denzel.”

More details of the Skepta documentary will soon follow as this remains a developing story.
