Sexyy Red opens up about postpartum depression
Though Sexyy Redd is predominantly known for her carefree and raunchy music, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a human being who goes through the same struggles as everyone else behind that on-stage persona. Recently, she’s let that side of her come through, as she has opened up about postpartum depression.
One of her biggest hits, ‘Get It Sexyy,’ was recently certified gold. To honour this achievement, Redd decided to open up about the backstory behind the track. She took to social media and revealed that the song came about when she was suffering mentally.
“The night get it sexy was made I was goin thru a lot just had my baby felt depressed and was goin thru postpartum,” she wrote in a heartfelt and honest post, “My team in Miami would leave me in the studio to write songs & I would just b in there crying thinkin about life.”
Feeling low and unable to engage creatively, Redd decided that it would be best for her to return home. In doing so, she felt comfortable once again and could put pen to paper and make what would eventually become a hit song.
“I finally said send me back to St. Louis so I can b around the ones I love and get back to me,” she wrote on social media, “Boom I’m in St. Louis I invite all my sisters and friends to my studio session we had blunts, bottles, food allet and I came out wit GET IT SEXYY GET IT SEXYY. It really was ah confidence booster for me. We was so turnt all my sadness was gone I love my family period.”
It was brave of Redd to open up and be so vulnerable about the song; however, it’s also sweet that a track so many used to turn up to comes out of turning up and feeling comfortable around people you love. It adds another layer to the song that people weren’t previously aware of, and it may see the track move further from being gold-certified to something even higher.
It’s been a big few months for Redd. In addition to having her hit song go gold, she also released her new album, In Sexyy We Trust, in May 2024. It received mixed reviews, but the main talking point was some questionable features from Drake following his beef with Kendrick, as he rapped over the famous ‘BBL Drizzy’ beat on the track ‘U My Everything’.
