Sean Kingston’s mother facing deportation after $1 million fraud scheme
Sean Kingston‘s mother is facing deportation after being found guilty of running a fraudulent scheme in March. Along with her son, she was convicted of stealing jewellery, high-end cars and more luxury goods.
On July 18th, Janice Turner’s lawyers asked the judge to sentence her to 30 months instead of the 63 to 78 months suggested by the sentencing guidelines.
According to Billboard, they claim the sentence would be exorbitant for a 62-year-old with “a myriad of health issues” and “minimal criminal history.”
While trying to persuade the judge, they said, “Ms Turner fed the hungry, clothed the less fortunate, and encouraged those who had lost their hope. Her generosity and love for others did not have a limit, and she exemplifies a life lived of service to the public.”
In addition to the prison sentence, they claimed she would likely be deported to Jamaica, adding, “She will be separated from her family and the friends she has.”
They wrote, “Ms Turner will go to prison; she has earned the prison sentence. However, a sentence greater than 30 months is a waste of taxpayer resources based upon the history and characteristics of Ms Turner.”
Turner and her son, best known for his hits ‘Beautiful Girls’ and ‘Eenie Meenie’ with Justin Bieber, were indicted in July 2024. They were accused of participating in a “scheme to defraud victim sellers of high-end specialty vehicles, jewellery, and other goods purchased by the defendants through the use of fraudulent documents.”
They allegedly “enriched themselves by falsely representing that they had executed bank wire or other monetary payment” on the purchases, but never paid the money. They’re said to have stolen roughly $1 million worth of property.
