Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs allegedly threatened to cut J Cole’s throat
When Kendrick Lamar released his ‘Control’ verse over a decade ago, it shook the rap game to its core. As the Compton rapper called out almost every artist in the game, people were left scrambling, trying to come up with responses and process the lyrics. Now, years later, the ripples are still surfacing as it has been alleged that Diddy threatened to slash J Cole’s throat when arguing over the verse.
The president of Top Dawg Entertainment, Terrence ‘Punch’ Henderson, recalled the altercation following a recent appearance on Tank and J Valentine’s R&B Money podcast. The fight allegedly occurred during an afterparty in New York following the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.
Punch did a good job not naming any names, but he did state that Cole and Diddy managed to have it out in front of a crowd of A-list actors and musicians at the party.
“The homie just did this song, right? Pissed a gang of people off, everybody was mad at it,” he recalled, “When the song came out, he was overseas, then he came back to the States… First place we stopped in was New York City and we first say, ‘Let’s go to the club’ because we want to check the temperature, see what everybody was on – LA stuff.”
Without explicitly mentioning the two rappers, Punch spoke about going to the club and having Cole and Diddy approach him to discuss the ‘Control’ verse. There was an altercation, but it turned out they had already argued before Punch and his team had even arrived.
After that, they went to the VIP section, where the real threat was made, “He was like, ‘If you ever say what you said to me earlier, ni**a, I’ll-‘ And he grabbed a bottle from the table,” said Punch referencing Diddy’s actions, “And he said, ‘What you gon’ do? Hit me on my head with a bottle?’ He was like, ‘Nah, I’m gonna break it on the table, and I’m gonna cut your throat’.”
A fight ensued, and a scuffle broke out across the VIP section, which had to be broken up. Nobody got seriously injured. We can be sure that Punch is referring to Diddy and Cole because he spoke about this event on Math Hoffa’s My Expert Opinion but with names.
“Puff and Cole was talking about the verse and they ended up getting into a little back and forth…” He recalled, “Then Puff came back over and their argument sparked up again. So from there, they ended up getting into the whole scuffle in the club.”
Both Diddy and Cole are yet to respond to the claims.
