ScHoolboy Q takes aim at OVO for blocking TDE artists from Toronto
The Top Dawg Entertainment rapper ScHoolboy Q has denounced Drake’s rival label OVO Sound for allegedly blocking TDE artists from performing in Toronto, Ontario. The rapper took a swipe at the city for becoming involved and seemed to reference some other issues between the two labels in a new post on X.
In the 1990s, it was East and West Coast rivalries. Now, it appears that it’s all about record labels. The social media furore in question took place on July 17th. ScHoolboy Q initially called out the Canadian authorities. “THey just canceled by sHow in Toronto,” he wrote. “Canadian police don’t want nobody from TDE performing.”
ScHoolboy Q continued in a subsequent post claiming that relations between TDE and Drake’s parent label, Young Money, were positive at the moment. He also mentioned that Anthony ‘Top Dawg’ Tiffith had been seen with Birdman and Lil Wayne recently. “Top was just hanging out wit Wayne and Baby smH,” he wrote with frustration. ScHoolboy Q also observed that OVO artist PARTYNEXTDOOR performed at the Palladium in Los Angeles without incident.
While asserting that he thought peace had been restored, ScHoolboy Q’s public address seemed poised to reignite the feud. He said that if TDE planned to make a move on OVO or Drake they would have done it. “If we wanted to get y’all we would’ve just did it,” he wrote. “Now wHen sumbody get Hurt don’t cry…”
In a later tweet, ScHoolboy Q took some of the venom out of the attack with a bit of laughter. “Nvm tHis sHit Lokey Hilarious,” he posted. “Ioni wHy dot put me in tHat f*cking video.”
With TDE being Kendrick Lamar’s former label, the animosity between the two factions began with the highly-publicised rift between Lamar and Drake of late. During the heat of the battle, during which several diss tracks were recorded on either side, ScHoolboy Q took Lamar’s side.
ScHoolboy Q joined Lamar for a performance of ‘Collard Greens’ at the ‘Pop Out’ show on June 10th. Q was among those who appeared in the particularly memorable black-and-white photo taken at the end of the gig. As the rift continues to unfold in a label rivalry, one can only hope for a peaceful resolution.
