Rich Homie Quan dead at 34

After delivering massive tracks with rappers such as Playboi Carti and Young Thug, Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan has passed away at the age of 34.

The passing of Quan, real name Dequantes Devontay Lamar, was confirmed by his family at the Fulton County Morgue, saying how they were “shattered and heartbroken by his sudden death.”

At this time, there has been no word as to what the cause of death is, with a representative from the Fulton County Medical Examiner stating, ” At this time, we cannot confirm or deny any information regarding Dequantes Devontay Lamar.”

Quan had been spending the last decade devoted to music. Ever since getting out of jail for 15 months on charges of burglary, he would continue working on various mixtapes before achieving mainstream success off the back of 2013’s ‘Type of Way’.

According to Quan himself, he credited his interest in music for saving his life, telling XXL, “I never saw myself going this far with music. Music was just a hobby at first. I never saw myself being on stage and rocking out shows. After I got out of jail, I started to take it more serious and that’s when my dream came true.”

After touring with Trinidad James in 2013, Quan would form the rap supergroup Rich Gang by teaming up with Birdman and Young Thug on a series of mixtapes. Following his first mixtape with the rap collective Rich Gang: The Tour Part 1, he released If You Ever Think I Will Stop Goin’ In Ask RR, which gave him his second hit, ‘Flex (Ooh Ooh Ooh)’.

He had also been known for appearing on features for various artists, including his collaboration with Kid Ink and Tyga for the song ‘Ride Out’ from Furious 7. Outside of the single ‘Gamble’ released from his only solo Back to the Basics, Quan had not released any other singles, with his latest release being the EP Family and Mula released in 2022.

Upon word of the rapper’s death, tributes have poured in from the community, including some suspecting what led to his demise. When penning his tribute, fellow rapper Boosie Badazz suspected that Quan may have passed away due to a drug overdose, posting on X, “Just got word @RichHomieQuan just OD. Just talked to Wuan the other day.”

Despite many speculations, no cause of death has been officially revealed.
