Rapper Lil Poppa’s cause of death revealed after sudden passing

Rapper Lil Poppa passed away last week, and now his cause of death has been revealed.

The Jacksonville, Florida, artist died in Georgia on February 18th at the age of 25. He was pronounced dead at 11:23am.

According to TMZ, his death has been ruled a suicide. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office in Georgia announced that he died after being shot in the head.

Poppa was signed to Yo Gotti’s CMG label. In a statement, the company wrote, “We are stunned and devastated by the loss of our beloved family member, Janarious ‘Lil Poppa’ Wheeler. Poppa was more than a talented artist – he was an ambitious young man with depth beyond his years and endless potential. Our love for him knew no bounds.”

They continued, “He was one of those rare artists who thoughtfully poured his pain, growth and truth into his art. His passion and authenticity connected and inspired fans from all walks of life. This is truly a heartbreaking loss for everyone who knew and loved him. Please keep his loved ones in your prayers.

CMG promised to uphold his legacy with “honour and respect. We are all better because of you. Long live Poppa.”

With over 883,000 monthly Spotify listeners, he released his final album, Almost Normal Again, on Interscope Records in August 2025. His biggest track, ‘Love & War’, has over 22 million streams.

A couple of years ago, Poppa referenced death on ‘Reintroduction’ from his Wee Are Who We Are album.

On the Tayo-produced song, he rapped, “Pac died at 25, Biggie died at 24/ And it made me nervous/ I just turned the same age a couple of days ago.”
