Why Pusha T resigned as president of Kanye West’s label
Pusha T signed onto Kanye West’s GOOD Music label in 2010, and, within five years, he was taking control of the whole thing. He succeeded Ye as the label’s president in 2015, but his reign, eventually, came to an end, too—and it was in an acrimonious fashion.
Confirmation of Push’s exit from the label occurred in 2022, while the man himself was giving an interview to XXL. The interviewer straight-up asked him if he was “still currently the president of Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music?” and Push, in fairness, gave an equally frank answer.
“No,” he replied. “No, I’m not.”
He explained that he was now focused on a his own label, Heir Wave Music Group, and a deal it had with Def Jam. But, as for GOOD Music, and for his relationship with Kanye, things had moved on. They weren’t even in contact anymore.
“He’s not speaking to me now,” Push claimed of Ye. “If you ain’t with it, you ain’t down. And I ain’t with it. I’m not budging on that. I’m not with it.”
Around the time that Pusha T was giving this interview to XXL, Kanye had begun to make headlines for his increasingly erratic and racist behaviour. He’d recently appeared on the far-right conspiracy theory website Infowars, during which time he praised the Nazis and Hitler.
“I heard about this new stuff [on InfoWars],” said at the time. “I don’t know. It’s something that just sort of tells me he’s not well, at the same time. I will say that. It’s going to places where it’s no way to move around it.”
Kanye recently apologised for his antisemitic behaviour, but there is, as yet, no sign of a thawing in relations between himself and Pusha T. Earlier this year, Push and his brother and Clipse bandmate Malice appeared in a feature for GQ, in which Push spoke about his former friend and collaborator in less than glowing terms.
“His intuition is even more genius-level, right?” Push said Ye. “But that’s why me and him don’t get along, because he sees through my fakeness with him. He knows I don’t think he’s a man. He knows it.”
Push stuck the boot in from there. “And that’s why we can’t build with each other no more,” he said. “That’s why me and him don’t click, because he knows what I really, really think of him. He’s showed me the weakest sides of him, and he knows how I think of weak people.”
