Podcaster Mal explains why J Cole needs to stop “talking greasy” on his songs
Podcasters and former foes of Joe Budden, Rory, and Mal have recently discussed the ongoing feud between J Cole and Freddie Gibbs. During their conversation, host Mal agreed with Gibbs’ recent assertion that J Cole can no longer “talk greasy” on his records.
Gibbs has been highly unimpressed with J Cole over many years, and the Indiana musician is most definitely not feeling his latest track, ‘cLOUDs’. Furthermore, he is irritated by Cole’s continued attempts to intimidate and present himself as a gangster.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Gibbs wrote, “youonlydie0nce.” He then took to his assumed burner account on Instagram and wrote, “N***az be rapping about how they kill rappers and kill they careers and blah blah blah, but he backing outta rap beefs.” In his post, he referenced J Cole’s choice to bow out of the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef after releasing ‘7 Minute Drill’.
On ‘cLOUDs’, J Cole raps lyrics such as “I charter unseen territories in ordеr / To push it farther than you n****s had ever thought of / I caught a lotta murder charges, turned artists / To martyrs when I rock, thot turns to goddess” and “Tectonic plates from a place where TECs on they waist / So stay safe or get left with chest on your face” Cole most definitely insinuates he is somewhat an aggressive, dangerous individual.
On their podcast, Rory & MAL, Mal revealed that he agreed with Gibbs’ sentiment that Cole really shouldn’t be rapping like he is dangerous when he backed away from a rap beef, presumably out of fear.
Agreeing with Gibbs, Mal told his co-host, “He [Cole] can’t talk like that. Other rappers that lost battles or won battles — they can talk greasy forever because you got in the ring and actually battled!”
Mal added, “But when you do what Cole did as a high-level MC as Freddie Gibbs is, he has the right to hear that and be like ‘Yo, why is he still talking like that?” Mal admitted that Cole had every right to back out of a beef, but they way he did it last year by deleting ‘7 Minute Drill’ and apologising put him in bad spot.
The two hosts then pondered whether Cole and Gibbs may have their own lyrical feud, as there seems to be a lot of bad blood between the two MCs. Gibbs has shown a lot of animosity towards the 2014 Forest Hills Drive creator since his apology last year. However, before that, Gibbs had love for the Dreamville founder. Still, they believed that it is still highly unlikely that the two will go head to head and agreed that Cole still has more love in hip-hop than Gibbs.
