Pharrell Williams names his favourite modern rapper

Singer and producer extraordinaire Pharrell Williams has worked with some of the biggest and brightest stars in the music industry, including a fair few rappers of elite status. As part of the production team The Neptunes, Pharrell has noticed time with Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dog, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, MC Lyte, Lil Kim, and SZA, just to name a few.

But when it comes to his absolute favourite rapper of the current day, Pharrell went with someone who isn’t a household name, at least not yet. “Moneybagg is my favourite, favourite, favourite, right now,” Williams enthused in a recent interview. That would be Moneybagg Yo, the Memphis rapper who recently notched his first number one album in America with A Gangsta’s Pain.

“Moneybagg Yo, to me, is like the pocket finder,” Williams continues. “Whenever he decides that he doesn’t want to rap anymore, he should go into denim — because he has so many pockets. His pockets, fuck! His nickname should be fuckin’ Denim! He has so many fuckin’ pockets. Moneybagg Yo is something else.”

Moneybagg wasn’t afraid to show his gratitude, responding with “Real Goat Stamped My Life Its Up”. This mutual admiration society isn’t coming out of anywhere, mind you. Pharrell appeared as a featured guest on A Gangsta’s Pain on the track ‘Certified Neptunes’. Perhaps unsurprisingly, The Neptunes themselves were the producers for the song as well.

Moneybagg’s most recent song, ‘Rookie of the Year’, came out in June and was dedicated to Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant. Pharrell, meanwhile, appeared on Tyler, the Creator’s recent LP Call Me If You Get Lost on the track ‘Juggernaut’, along with his and The Neptunes contributions to Pop Smoke’s latest posthumous LP, Faith.
