The one requirement 50 Cent has for every one of his shows: “It’s absolutely a must”
Although 50 Cent is known for his legendary albums and high-quality music, he is also known for his fantastic business ventures in Hollywood. As the creator of shows such as Power, Raising Kanan and other series, the Queens emcee has become a revered TV producer and is respected in the field.
However, there is one unknown ingredient that is a must for 50 Cent and is a common feature throughout all of his shows. That said, in an interview with ABC, the Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ creator disclosed that all of his productions have to have strong women in them.
50 Cent’s character in the series Power, Kanan Stark, is the main character of the prequel series Raising Kanan, which he released after the success of the original Starz series. In the show, Kanan is raised by a single mother, played by actor Patina Miller, who happens to be a drug queenpin.
Few know that the character, Raq, is actually based on the emcee’s mother, Sabrina Jackson. As such, the role was written in the image of a strong woman who can stand up to any man.
In an interview with Digital Spy, Patina Miller explained what it was like to embody the role of Raq, stating, You really get to see what power means to Raquel… She’s thinking about her legacy, she’s thinking about how to finesse all the men, and she’s not afraid of anyone!”
She continued, “There is nothing that she hasn’t seen before. She ran with a really crazy crew, and so she’s seen a lot of things, and she knows how to assert herself, but she tries to withhold the violence of it all because she’s a thinker.”
Fifty has previously admitted that some of the relationship of Kanan and his mother is drawn directly from his life. While speaking about the series on ABC, the ‘Candy Shop’ rhymer unveiled, “These are real things, like, I really experienced being roughed up in the park before my mom sent me back to the park, and I was just more afraid of her than the kids in the park, so I ended up going back to fight them instead of dealing with my mom.”
He continued, “It was probably the biggest thing to describe what my relationship with my mom was like fairly early on, you know, because she was the only provider, so she was like the source of everything that’s good; if she’s angry with you then nothing good is around, you know what I’m saying.”
Concerning the need for strong women in all of his series, Fifty revealed that it is compulsory on the streaming network, disclosing, “It’s a part of the mandate at Starz — they’ll say premium women. If it doesn’t have those things, it’s pretty tough to sell the idea. They don’t tell you how much or who to place in that position. But it’s absolutely a must in the actual storytelling process that you build that way.”
