OG Maco, trap rap pioneer, has died aged 32
The hip-hop world is in shock after rapper and music maker OG Maco has died, aged 32, following a gunshot wound to the head.
Maco had been in hospital for several weeks following an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His family revealed a few weeks ago that Maco was in a “critical but stable condition” following an alleged suicide attempt.
Maco, whose real name is Benedict Ciajulam Ihesiba Jr, had been in a coma since that time but his condition declined in recent days as doctors attempted to get a brain scan that would allow them to flush the toxins from the rapper’s system.
The rapper passed away on December 26th in Los Angeles, surrounded by his family.
His family confirmed the tragic news in a statement. “With heavy hearts, we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our beloved Ben, known to the world as OG Maco. His life was a testament to resilience, creativity and boundless love. Through his music, passion and unwavering spirit, he touched so many lives and left a lasting impact.”
The message continued: “While we grieve this immense loss, we also celebrate the extraordinary life he lived – one that will continue to inspire and uplift others. Maco’s influence, both as an artist and as a person, will remain forever etched in our hearts.

Maco had a long line of health issues. In 2016, he suffered a horrific car accident which left him without his right eye, and, in 2019, he was diagnosed with a flesh-eating disease that scarred his body and face.
One of the pioneers of trap rap, Maco’s manager Poppa Perc, confirmed that OG Maco was “about to rebrand and drop [new music] under a whole new alias”.
