Nipsey Hussle to be honoured with renaming of Los Angeles intersection
An intersection in Los Angeles will be renamed in honour of Nipsey Hussle, following his death in 2019.
The intersection at Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue will be known as Nipsey Hussle Square to recognise his legacy and dedication to the community.
According to CBS News, the renaming will take place at 10am on February 28th, with attendance from LA City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Councilwoman Heather Hutt, and California State Assemblyman Isaac Bryan.
Nipsey’s brother, Blacc Sam, who serves as CEO of the rapper’s The Marathon brand, will also be at the ceremony.
The 33-year-old was shot and killed near the intersection on March 31st, 2019, outside of his Marathon Clothing store.
Nipsey often mentioned Crenshaw and Slauson, naming his 2013 mixtape Crenshaw, which famously sold 1,000 copies for $100 each. He also released projects titled Slauson Boy and Slauson Boy 2.
The rapper (real name Ermias Asghedom) was born and raised in the Crenshaw District of South Central Los Angeles and was thrust into gang life at a young age.
“As gang members, as young dudes in the streets, especially in LA, we’re the effect of a situation,” he told DJBooth. “We didn’t wake up and create our own mindstate and our environment; we adapted our survival instincts.”
He continued, “Gangbanging is a survival instinct, regardless of how anybody tries to paint it. It’s a lot of, like you said, sensationalised conceptions of what it’s about – lowridin’, fuckin’ bitches, runnin’ amok – but at the same time, it’s a survival instinct first.”
Nipsey released his final album, Victory Lap, in February 2018, debuting at number four on the Billboard 200 chart. It later reached number two after he died.
