Nicki Minaj escalates Jay-Z feud with old lyrics

Nicki Minaj has once again found herself at the centre of controversy. Getting herself into heated arguments seems to be a skill that Minaj is unrivalled in, with many beefs to her name, and the most recent of which is a continued lashing out at Jay-Z for not choosing Lil Wayne for the Super Bowl half time performance.

Minaj’s comments haven’t gone unchallenged, as many fans criticised her for involving herself in the Super Bowl controversy. The rapper has made it her personal mission to ensure Lil Wayne takes to the stage during the NFL match as it takes place in his hometown, New Orleans, and that everybody is aware he should be doing it.

Following the backlash, Minaj took a step back from the controversy and laid low for a few days. However, she is now happy to reignite the feud with Jay-Z as she has tweeted some old lyrics from her 2014 track ‘All Things Go’, which seem to have her hinting at the fake attitude of people in the music industry.

“Lemme make this clear,” she raps, “I’m not difficult I’m just bout my business. I’m not into fake industry parties and fake agendas.” It’s clear that Minaj is saying she finds Jay-Z “fake” and thinks that his recent Lil Wayne snub proves that.

Minaj’s closing line of the tweet also seems to nod at Jay-Z as she writes, “Rock with ppl for how they make me feel, not what they give me.” Again, this seems to be Minaj drawing a clear line in the sand between her friends and enemies in the industry. She has never strayed from supporting Young Money artists such as Drake and Lil Wayne, so she will likely continue doing so.

Minaj could also be hinting about a tweet from Memphis Bleek that went viral amidst this controversy. He reposted a video of Jay-Z saying that rappers heavily criticise him for what he “didn’t do” for them rather than what he does do.

In her tweets, Minaj states she doesn’t care about what people give her and essentially rebukes Memphis Bleek’s critiques. It may also be the case that we are overanalysing her tweet, as in past beefs, Minaj has been a lot more upfront with how she feels. It could be that if she had a problem with anyone in the industry, she would simply say that.

Last week, Lil Wayne said of the snubbing: “That hurt, it hurt a lot. I thought there was nothing better that spot, on that stage, on that platform.”

He continued, “It broke me, but I’m just trying to put myself back together.”
