New York man sentenced to 20 years in prison for murdering Chicago rapper

Chicago rapper Vontae was killed in 2022, and the man responsible will now spend two decades behind bars.

The 27-year-old drill artist (real name Avanti Frowner) lost his life during an armed robbery four years ago.

According to News12, Isiah Garrett, also 27, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for murder on March 31st after shooting, beating and robbing the rapper, also known as MoneyGangVontae.

The June 9th, 2022, incident took place at Amazing Pharmacy in the Bronx’s Crotona neighbourhood. Vontae, who was based in Los Angeles at the time, was in New York City for a performance and went to a pharmacy with a friend to buy medication.

The pair were held at gunpoint at around 2am, with Garrett accused of forcing Vontae into the pharmacy and onto the floor, where he was allegedly “severely beaten.”

Garrett allegedly shot Vontae 12 times in the torso; he was rushed to the hospital and later died of his injuries.

It took police officers less than two weeks to find Garrett and two others after they fled to Georgia, capturing them on June 22nd, 2022. Garrett pleaded guilty to murder on March 3rd, 2026.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D Clark said in court, “The victim, Avanti Frowner, known as ‘Vontae,’ was in New York and needed medication at a pharmacy. As he left the pharmacy, he and his friend were robbed of jewellery, and then the defendant forced Frowner back into the store at gunpoint and fired a dozen times, killing him. He callously murdered Frowner and put everyone in the pharmacy and on the street at risk.”

With over 21,000 followers, Vontae is best known for songs such as ‘Feel My Pain‘, ‘5G’, ‘On Sight’, ‘Bagg’, and ‘Harder Way’.

28-year-old co-defendant, Nayshon White, pleaded guilty to manslaughter this week and is scheduled to be sentenced to 20 years to life on May 29th, 2026.
