The 2004 MF DOOM song Mac Miller called “the fucking shit”
MF DOOM was a rapper’s rapper. He never achieved truly mainstream success, but rap aficionados adored his idiosyncratic, wildly imaginative approach to the form. For Mac Miller, DOOM was a master.
DOOM was a prolific artist, having released six solo studio albums and seven collaborative ones during his lifetime, not to mention live albums, instrumental albums, and compilations. His best work is often cited as the Madvillainy album he released with Madlib in March 2004, but another one that’s in with a shout was released that very same year.
In November, DOOM released his fifth solo album, Mm..Food, which was heavy on the concept. This was a record dedicated to food, with food-related metaphors and puns and jokes being littered liberally throughout.
DOOM, as was his habit, produced the vast majority of songs on the album, with only Madlib, PNS and Count Bass D jumping on to create some beats for it. Count Bass D, Angelika, 4ize and Mr Fantastik also performed on some tracks.
But DOOM is very much the star of Mm..Food, and, for Mac Miller, it was the specific contrast of his voice against the beats that made it so good. Speaking to Complex about it in 2013, Mac noted how much he loved “the texture of his voice against the beats.” It was, in Mac’s words, “very ‘fuck you’” in nature.
“He kind of throws it down there,” Mac said of DOOM’s approach to Mm..Food, “but it’s very purposeful. It sounds effortless, but everything is purposeful.”
Mac specifically highlighted the song ‘Vomitspit,’ which he described as “the fucking shit.” It’s a song that suits any mood or moment.
“It’s great music for, like, anything in life,” he said. “You can play it anytime, it’s good.”
‘Vomitspit’ actually began life as another song, ‘Vomit,’ which DOOM decided to revisit when it came to putting together Mm..Food. He reworked it a bit and changed the name, and it now forms a part of one of his most legendary albums.
