Method Man and Fat Joe open up about mental health issues
Two New York legends recently sat down to speak about their mental health and the stresses of everyday life. Wu-Tang Clan icon Method Man and Terror Squad founder Fat Joe are known for their music-making skills, however, that wasn’t the focus of their most recent exchange.
Fat Joe recently teamed up with the television network Starz to launch his own TV Show, Fat Joe Talks. In a short preview released by the ‘Lean Back’ rhymer, Method Man can be heard speaking about how his mental issues have never truly subsided. On the other hand, Joe emphasises how the death of his good friend, Big Pun, affected him.
Detailing the ups and downs of his own mental health, Method Man told Joe, “I go through these bouts with certain shit. It never really goes away.” However, Fat Joe’s story was a little more morbid.
During the discussion, Joe spoke about a string of back-to-back deaths he experienced within the space of 24 months. Vividly recalling how it affected his emotions, the ‘John Blaze’ emcee disclosed, “I went through depression after my sister died, Pun died, my grandfather [at the] same time. So I was two years straight going to therapists. It could be a sunny day [and] shit look dark outside.”
Method Man asked Fat Joe whether or not he ever lashed out at his own family after the back-to-back deaths. Joe admitted he didn’t but explained how ill he was, stating, “I was sleeping in the bathtub with no water running.”
The show on Starz is a new venture for Fat Joe, and in a statement released by the network, they stated that Joe Talks will “give viewers unique access into the lives of today’s most influential personalities who drive the cultural zeitgeist.”
The head programmer of Starz, Kathryn Busby, added, “Fat Joe Talks is an exciting foray into talk, and who better than Joe—a legend in and of himself—to drive provocative conversations that tap into the zeitgeist and matter to our audience. We are thrilled to be working with Joe and our partners at SpringHill and Embassy Row to launch this incredible show, offering authentic, backstage, rare access to these cultural icons.”
