Method Man doesn’t believe Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs trial is relevant to hip-hop

Method Man and Diddy have known each other for decades. The two helped pioneer East Coast rap music in the 1990s and were considered huge figures in the genre. They worked at different ends of the musical spectrum, as Method Man cultivated the underground sound with Wu-Tang Clan, while Diddy pioneered a commercial style. However, they still worked parallel to one another.

Diddy was arrested on September 16th and was charged with sex trafficking and racketeering. Should he be found guilty, the mogul will likely spend the rest of his life in prison, as his violent and manipulative actions that have been cited in his case are damning. He has pled not guilty to all of the charges, but has been denied bail.

Method Man recently spoke to TMZ, who asked him whether he thought the current allegations against Diddy would impact hip-hop as a whole. Method Man seemed somewhat confused by the question and, in turn, urged fans not to let the actions of one evil man impact the entire genre.

“I don’t think it was anything to do with hip-hop,” said Method Man when speaking to TMZ, “What are we talking about here, really.” The reporter responded by saying hey were talking about Diddy’s influence on the genre and whether it would make it difficult for outsiders to separate the two.

Regardless of the clarification, Method Man still wasn’t buying it. “It has nothing to do with hip-hop,” he asserted, “I don’t see the correlation.”

Furthermore, he then talked about R Kelly and highlighted how that hasn’t impacted the R&B industry, and therefore, Diddy’s allegations shouldn’t impact hip-hop. “If we’re talking about music and creative and stuff, there are people still listening to R Kelly shit,” he said.

Additionally, Method Man has made it clear that he tried to stay out of the way of Diddy throughout his career.

Previously, he told a story on Hot 97 about when he bumped into Diddy at the House of Blues in the 1990s.

Apparently, Diddy told the Wu-Tang rapper to get in a car and come to a party, which he didn’t want to do. “There’s no way I’m getting in that motherfucking car,” he said to the radio hosts. The only person in Diddy’s protégé that Method Man got close to was The Notorious B.I.G. In fact, Method Man was the only feature to appear on Biggie’s debut, Ready to Die.
