Megan Thee Stallion breaks YouTube record for female rapper

It was recently announced that Houston emcee Megan Thee Stallion has broken the YouTube record for most views by a female rapper in 24 hours. The lyricist (real name Megan Pete) released her video ‘Cobra’ on November 3rd and the the Douglas Bernardt-directed video accrued over 2.15million views in 24 hours.

The track from Pete also racked up over 1million streams on Spotify in 24 hours. ‘Cobra’ is Pete’s first single since she parted ways with the Houston-based label 1501 Certified Entertainment after a lengthy legal dispute.

The visuals for ‘Cobra’ outperformed Doja Cat’s ‘Demons’, which peaked at 2 million, and Ice Spice’s ‘Deli’, which reached 1.85 million. The single is Pete’s first since her collaboration with Cardi B on ‘Bongos’ and her song ‘Out Alpha The Alpha’, which the rapper wrote for the upcoming A24 film Dicks: The Musical.

Megan Thee Stallion hasn’t announced a new project. Still, she seems to be moving forward from her legal disputes with 1501 and Tory Lanez as she opens the video, stating, “Just as a snake sheds its skin. We must shed our past. Over and over again.”

Pete’s 2022 album was met with critical acclaim. NME gave the project four stars, writing, “After Traumazine’s 18 tracks, there should be only one feeling coursing through your body: utter elation…she’s pushed her pen since ‘Good News’ while also illustrating her broad musicality.”

Since Traumazine, the lyricist has decided to set up her own label with ‘Cobra’ getting released through Hot Girl Entertainment. The video for the single is very steamy and is a big return for Pete.

Prior to the release of ‘Cobra’, Pete released a statement reading, “Cobras exemplify courage and self-reliance. They stand tall and fierce in the face of challenges, teaching one to tap into their inner strength and rely on oneself to conquer their threats. Emulating the cobra helps one be more confident in the person they are within.”
