The meaning behind Nicki Minaj’s ‘Beez in the Trap’

Nicki Minaj has been one of the most successful musicians of the last decade and a half, unambiguously claiming her place among the world’s highest-selling artists. She is certainly one of rap’s leading female forces, known for her strange alter ego, rapid flow, and unique, witty turns of phrase. One of her signature songs, ‘Beez in the Trap,’ has an enduring cultural resonance even today, but what, exactly, does it mean?

Following its release in 2012, ‘Beez in the Trap’ didn’t immediately find amazing success. It entered the Hot Digital Singles chart at number 73—hardly representing the greatest ever performance—but, over time, it slowly picked up momentum and became something of a phenomenon. By the end of 2014, US sales had reached a million copies, and it was later certified three times Platinum in 2023. It has even very recently reemerged as a cultural hit after being mashed up with the 4 Non Blondes classic ‘What’s Up’ for a TikTok trend.

But, for some people, the meaning of the song and the phrase at its centre have been quite unclear. To that end, Minaj appeared on The Graham Norton Show in 2012 to help explain what it is actually about. “It just means, ‘I am always…’ You know, that’s our slang way of saying, ‘I beez doing such-and-such-and-such,’” she said, somewhat cryptically. “So it’s really like, ‘I am always in the trap.’ Now, the trap, ladies and gentlemen, relates to anywhere where you get your money.”

To be fair, that doesn’t necessarily clear things up. But the song, basically, is about how successful Minaj has become. “Beez,” in the context of the track, translates to “I am always”—as in, “I beez…” The “trap,” meanwhile, is Southern slang for a place where a drug dealer might sell their wares. But, in the song, it serves to denote a more general place where someone might make their money.

In Minaj’s case, a place to make money would refer to the sites within which she conducts her music career, like, for instance, in the studio. Therefore, in proclaiming, “I beez in the trap, be-beez in the trap,” she is saying that “I am always in the studio,” where she creates the music that brings her such enviable wealth and success.

It’s a very American, braggadocious sort of message. It is about pointing towards her immense accomplishments, boasting about them, but also stating that it takes hard work to reach that point. She doesn’t wait around for success to greet her. She’s always in the trap, working away for what she’s got.
