
MC Lyte pays tribute to Rob Base following his death
MC Lyte has paid tribute to Rob Base following his death last week.
The Harlem rapper, best known for his hit 1988 single ‘It Takes Two’, died on May 22nd at the age of 59.
During an interview with TMZ this week, Lyte remembered Base for his impact on hip-hop.
“I mean, he’s one of the most prolific MCs with one of the most important contributions to hip-hop music and culture, ever,” she said.
She added, “[I was] definitely [surprised by his death]. I wasn’t in contact with him, but we had several shows together throughout the years, and we kind of came up at the same time within hip-hop. So, it’s a sad loss.”
Base’s death was announced through his official Instagram account, revealing that cancer was the cause of his death.
“Today, we share the heartbreaking news that hip hop legend Rob Base passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, surrounded by family after a private battle with cancer,” the statement began. “Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world.”
It continued, “Beyond the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten. Thank you for the music, the memories, and the moments that became the soundtrack to our lives. Rest in Paradise, Rob Base.”
Base was born Robert Ginyard and grew up in New York City. He was part of the duo, Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock, with their single ‘It Takes Two’ reaching number 36 on the Hot 100 and number 24 in the UK Singles Chart. It’s certified platinum in the US.
